What a policy can cover
- Trip cancellation and interruption: pays you back for prepaid trip costs if you cancel or cut a trip short for a covered reason.
- Travel medical: short-term care if you're sick or hurt on your trip.
- Medical evacuation: emergency transport to a suitable hospital or home.
- Baggage: lost or delayed luggage.
Pre-existing conditions are one of the most common exclusions, so read that part of any policy carefully.
Cancel For Any Reason
Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) is usually an add-on to a standard policy. It typically has to be bought soon after you book, costs more, and pays back only part of your trip cost.
Medicare and cruising
Medicare usually doesn't cover care outside the U.S. One limited exception is care on a ship that's in a U.S. port or within six hours of one. Some Medigap plans include a foreign travel emergency benefit. The State Department notes that an air ambulance back to the U.S. can cost $20,000 to $200,000.
